Neighborhood Revitalization -- Durham + Richmond Master Plans
The Durham HOPE VI dramatically transformed North East Central Durham by eliminating obsolete public housing, placing 145 new housing units on the site, and siting an addition 455 units throughout the larger neighborhood. Housing types include single-family, duplex, and townhouse units, with a substantial portion designated for homeownership.
For the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority, ICON completed two plans that replace unused public housing with new mixed-income neighborhoods. The first plan replaces 900 units of public housing with 2,000 units in a mixed use development in the city's historic North Jackson Ward. The second replaces 64 units of similarly defunct public housing with 300 mixed income units, weaving together three adjacent neighborhoods around a common elementary school. Both projects offer great potential for transformation.
